Student Employment Opportunities

The Classroom Setter is responsible for setting up Deane Chapel prior to the start of classes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in Principles of Music I. 

Job Duties include:

  • Moving Chairs
  • Moving Platforms 
  • Moving the piano
  • Making sure the room looks presentable 
  • Other duties as assigned

The College Choir Room Setter is responsible for setting up Deane Chapel prior to every choir rehearsal. The ideal candidate will be a current member of the Westmont College Choir. 

Job Duties include:

  • Moving Chairs
  • Moving Platforms 
  • Moving the piano
  • Coordinating with Dr. Shasberger for chair placement
  • Making sure the room looks presentable 
  • Other duties as assigned

The Colloquium Manager is responsible for organizing the weekly recital programs held every Tuesday in Deane Chapel. (Flexible Schedule)

Job Duties include:

  • Receiving and responding to emails throughout the week
  • Working with Professors to get everyone's content organized and completed in a timely manner
  • Confirming who is/isn't registered for colloquium
  • Keeping track of various programs
  • Proof reading submitted colloquium recital content
  • Creating the colloquium program each week
  • Printing and cutting programs
  • Providing physical and digital program copies for departmental archiving 
  • Other duties as assigned

The Choir and Orchestra Librarians are special jobs appointed by the choir and orchestra members via a group vote during year end cabinet elections. The librarians are responsible for organizing and distributing music to their respective ensembles. (Flexible Schedule)

Job Duties include:

  • Creating name labels for Music folders
  • Distributing Folders at first rehearsal (Should include music and pencil)
  • Copying downloaded music where needed
  • Numbering measures, if needed
  • Organizing all rented or purchased music for distribution to musicians throughout the year
  • Maintaining a well-organized file of master copies 
  • Speaking to the ensembles about personal responsibility in maintaining their folder and having it with them at all times it is needed, and how they can get replacements for anything that they might happen to lose
  • Assisting students who may have lost copies of their music during the year after a concert (Fall, Christmas, Masterworks, and Spring, etc...)
  • Returning rental music to publishers
  • Returning purchased music to library at end of the year
  • Helping students prep their folders prior to spring tour
  • Recycling music no longer needed
  • Emptying concert folders, and storing them in Deane Chapel closet
  • Maintaining an organized work space
  • Other duties as assigned 

Music Event Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the successful set-up, completion, and teardown of various music events. This job entails a fair amount of filming. 

Job Duties include:

  • Signing up for gigs 
  • Communicating with other Event Coordinators to ensure all events are covered
  • Receiving and responding to emails and texts
  • Arriving at least 1 hour before each event to set-up chairs, the video camera, the audio recorder and to assist performers with their set-up needs. 
  • Videotaping colloquium and other music events.
  • Managing music event set-up (chair placement, piano position, etc...)
  • Greeting event guests, and handing out programs
  • Working the audio recorder in Deane Chapel 
  • Cleaning up after an event
  • Leaving a stack of programs and audio CD in music office after events 
  • Editing videos and posting them to online archive 
  • Other duties as assigned

Music Office Assistants are responsible for assisting the music department staff with various tasks and projects. 

Job Duties vary and may include:

  • Making and answering phone calls
  • Emailing
  • Prospective student outreach
  • Working in Microsoft word or excel 
  • Working in Google Drive
  • Designing with Adobe indesign 
  • Upper campus runs
  • Doing the dishes
  • Cleaning the kitchen
  • Taking the trash out
  • Attending concerts, meetings, etc. as support staff
  • Organizing and cleaning 
  • Projects
  • Data Entry
  • Working with deadlines
  • Other duties as assigned

The Orchestra Crew is responsible for setup and teardown of concerts and rehearsals. (Flexible Schedule)

Job Duties include:

  • Signing up for gigs
  • Maintaining a google calendar 
  • Communicating with other crew members to ensure all events are covered
  • Heavy Lifting
  • Teamwork 
  • Packing/playing Tetris 
  • Problem Solving
  • Transporting orchestra instruments, stands, and equipment
  • Rehearsal set-up/tear down
  • Concert set-up/tear down
  • Coordinating with the Crew Manager
  • Other duties as Assigned

The Orchestra Crew Manager is responsible for overseeing the setup and teardown of concerts and rehearsals.

Job Duties include:

  • Signing up for gigs
  • Maintaining a google calendar 
  • Communicating with other crew members to ensure all events are covered
  • Gathering lunch/dinner orders from the crew
  • Emailing
  • Heavy Lifting
  • Teamwork 
  • Packing/playing Tetris

  • Transporting orchestra instruments, stands, and equipment
  • Creating an efficient transportation, move-in, move-out plan
  • Overseeing Rehearsal set-up/tear down
  • Overseeing Concert set-up/tear down
  • Coordinating schedules with other crew members
  • Keeping in constant communication with Music Office Staff, the Conductor, the percussionists, and the rest of the orchestra crew
  • Other duties as assigned

Piano Accompanists are responsible for accompanying student musicians. Applicants must receive approval from Dr. Steve Hodson.

Job Duties include:

  • Accompanying for private lessons
  • Accompanying for rehearsals
  • Accompanying for student recitals

SANTA BARBARA SYMPHONY INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR

The Santa Barbara Symphony has internship opportunities across the organization for 2019-2020.
 

Office Internships

The Symphony is accepting interns in the following departments:

  • Development - learn the fundamentals of fundraising and friend-raising.
  • Artistic -learn the administrative side of the orchestra world.
  • Education - learn to manage and implement education programs.
  • Community - develop skills in community engagement via projects.
  • Marketing - learn communications, sales, and marketing for an orchestra.
Teaching Internships

BRAVO!
A collaboration with Santa Barbara Unified School District, BRAVO! offers after-school, twice-weekly, hands-on music classes for more than 250 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Interns will assist classroom teachers with running group classes, individual lessons for students who need additional support, running sectionals, and supporting basic program logistics.

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, October through early May, 4:00pm to 5:30pm
  • Opportunities to work with credentialed SBUSD music teachers and professional Santa Barbara Symphony Teaching Artist
  • Learn basic classroom management through hands-on experience.
  • Concerts and Holiday Parade

Philharmonia Orchestra; Camerata Orchestra
The Symphony’s Youth Ensembles provide students, ages 9-14, with an ensemble experience. Students attend weekly rehearsals and perform three public concerts. Interns are needed to serve as mentors to the students by playing alongside students at weekly rehearsals and at concerts and teaching students in pullouts as needed.

  • Sundays beginning September 8th, 1:00 pm to 2:30pm or 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
  • Opportunities to work with professional Santa Barbara Symphony Teaching Artists
  • Students rehearse weekly with a professional conductor/instrument specialists
  • Concerts three times per year

Student Musicians are freelance workers represented by the Music Department. (Flexible Schedule)

Job Duties include:

  • Registering with the Music Office as an on-campus musician for hire
  • Responding to gig requests as they arise
  • Performing for various events both on and off campus
  • Coordinating with both the Music Office and the Contracting Department
  • Submitting timecards to the Music Office
