Manager's Toolkit Offer!
Once job references have been obtained, Human Resources works with the hiring manager to determine an appropriate pay offer, which is then approved by the Vice President. Some Vice Presidents prefer to be involved in the initial discussions about pay.
It is the responsibility of Human Resources to develop a pay recommendation. In collaboration with the hiring manager, the College’s strategy in developing pay offers is threefold:
- To develop pay recommendations that give the fullest consideration possible to candidates’ applicable skills and past experience
- To avoid a negative experience of negotiating pay with candidates
- To ensure that pay offers are in the proper relationship to the pay of current employees in comparable jobs with comparable experience and skills
Once job references and approval on both the hire and pay rate from the Vice President responsible for are obtained, an offer of employment may be made. Offers are typically first made verbally by the supervisor and then confirmed in writing by Human Resources. Written offers of employment contain very specific language for example, the position title, pay rate, including starting date, work schedule, etc. When offering a position, supervisors should feel free to highlight areas mentioned in the written offer and express enthusiasm at the candidate’s opportunity to join Westmont.
For certain positions, the offer is contingent on a pre-employment, post-offer physical paid for by the College. Also included in the offer packet are the “Employee Handbook”, the “Article’s of Faith” as well as Westmont’s “Community Life Statement” statement. Applicants must return a signed acceptance of our time-sensitive offer.
