Office of the Registrar Academic Probation/Suspension

A. REGULAR STANDING.

  A student is considered to be in good standing with a 2.00 cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) in courses taken at Westmont and on Westmont  off-campus programs.

B. ACADEMIC PROBATION AND SUSPENSION

  A student is automatically placed on academic probation if his/her cumulative G.P.A. falls below 2.00.

  A student placed on academic probation is eligible to return for one more semester at the end of which his/her cumulative GPA must be raised to 2.00. If his/her cumulative GPA remains below 2.00, the student is automatically suspended and may return only if an appeal for reinstatement is granted (see below).

  Students on academic probation are expected to take steps to identify and address the issues which resulted in their academic probation.  Failure to follow through will be considered in any future academic petition or appeal.

1. Any student who has been placed on academic probation must register for and attend APP-002 Successful Scholars Seminar. The purpose of this seminar is:
   1. to investigate why the student’s previous efforts were unsuccessful,
   2. to review the student’s current selection of courses, work schedule, and other involvements,
   3. to develop a plan for future academic success, and
   4. to set up a schedule of accountability meetings throughout the semester.
2. Students on academic probation will automatically be enrolled in APP-002 Successful Scholars Seminar.
3. Students on academic probation are not eligible to apply for Student Life Leadership positions. Applicants must have a minimum 2.3 GPA. If a current student leader's GPA falls below 2.3, the student will be required to meet with their organizational advisor or supervisor to discuss the situation and determine whether the student will be allowed to continue to serve in the role. C.  ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY

  To compete, intercollegiate athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0.  In addition, athletes must meet all of the NCAA eligibility standards. See Athletics Director or Registrar for information.

D.  REINSTATEMENT FOLLOWING ACADEMIC SUSPENSION

1. A student electing to appeal for reinstatement should make clear statements addressing the following points in a letter to the Admissions Committee sent to the Registrar:
   1. reasons for wishing to remain enrolled at Westmont;
   2. the student’s understanding of why academic efforts were previously unsuccessful;
   3. the student’s reasons for expecting future success if reinstated.
2. The Admissions Committee:
   1. may act to reinstate;
   2. may deny readmission;
   3. may set conditions to be met before readmission will be considered.
3. A student who is reinstated remains on academic probation.  The student must register for at least 12 units and not more than 16 academic units (and a P.E.A. class if needed).
4. If a suspended student is denied reinstatement, the Admissions Committee will consider a further appeal only if the student has additional information to present. The appeals procedure may require the student to appear in person before the Admissions Committee.
